    Mardi Gras: Day 1

Our Mardi Gras partying has officially began!

New Orleans is the center of the Mardi Gras universe. Mardi Gras in the Crescent City is outrageous, festive, and fabulous! The society parties start on Twelfth Night, January 6, and continue through Fat Tuesday, which this year is February 24. The parades started on February 7, 2009. Millions of people from all over the world will descend on New Orleans to get their party on before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday.

NO French Quarter Second Line Mardi Gras

With all that fun out there, how do you decide which events to attend? Well hit the highlights here, we got help from Bobbi Mannino, Public Relations Director of www.MardiGrasNewOrleans.com.

What are the largest krewes? According to Bobbi, “The largest krewes (the most members) are the Krewe of Endymion, Krewe of Bacchus, Krewe of Zulu, and Krewe of Orpheus. I believe the Super Krewes are the ones that have the extremely large (I call them ‘mega’) floats ... Krewe of Endymion and Krewe of Bacchus.”

What are the most popular parades? Well here's the list:

Endymion – the only New Orleans parade to use a different parade route. It rolls through Mid-City and ends up Downtown. It has a celebrity Grand Marshall.

Bacchus - only parade to have a celebrity King – they have a great list of past kings such as Bob Hope, Britney Spears, etc.

Zulu – the only African American krewe - they parade on Mardi Gras morning just prior to Rex.

Rex - probably the best known parade because Rex is considered "King of Carnival".

Proteus - still uses the old floats with the old wagon wheels.

Orpheus - a krewe formed by Harry Connick, Jr. He often invites many of his musician friends to ride with him.

Muses - an all female parade with lots of bling and glitz!

No matter what there will be partying going on everywhere.. If you see us out make sure you gimme luv!!

    Y3: What You Think?

Fashion Designing star Yamamoto Yohji and Adidas have teamed up to make Y-3, a brand of clothing that combines Adidas’ street sensiblility with Yamamoto’s elegance and style. The project was started a while back, but it coming to full fruition now, as celebrities worldwide are supporting it.

White Kicks Y-3 StyleYamamoto Yohji was born in Yokohama in 1943. 25 years later he graduated from Bunka Fashion college and started his own fashion line. In the mid-80s, Yamamoto, Kawakubo Rei, and Miyake Issei made Tokyo into the fashion capital of Asia, as it is today. Yamamoto has long been a star in the international fashion world, but if you’re as out of touch with that as I am, you may know him for his costume designs in Kitano Takeshi’s Brother, Dolls, and Zatoichi. He often works with Kitano, along with many other directors, both Japanese and not. His latest costume work was on Kitano Takeshi’s “Takeshis’” in 2005. His Y’s line has outlets all over the world, including Belgium, France, Italy, Hong Kong, and the USA.

Yamamoto’s style is much different than most designers that come to mind. He doesn’tDesigns for Y-3's Spring/Summer 2008 Line like using many colors and usually designs loose fitting clothing and headwear, which is great for the Adidas line. From what can be seen on the Y-3 official website, it looks like Yamamoto is going for “less is more.” The line is in high anticipation, as many celebrities are backing it now. Of particular note is New Orleans Saints Player Reggie Bush, British Rock Band Placebo and American Rappers Lupe Fiasco and Jay-Z.

I was impressed by the sensible designs and how well he uses the color black in his clothes without making them look plain. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing a boom of hot new designs from him in later months.

Are you feeling Y-3 and Yamamoto’s style? Or does Y-3 not live up to the hype? Tell me what you think!
